Easter Grass

Years ago we were introduced to the idea of growing your own Easter grass.  I was speechless when I saw the beautiful baskets of lush (real) grass.  These baskets were embellished with ribbon, butterflies and flowers.

Our baskets were never the same!  Plastic grass?  Shredded paper? 

There was no turning back.

We plant it a few days before Palm Sunday. 

It's easy and the results are so pretty.

You'll need whole wheat grains (also called wheat berries).  We get ours from the local health food store.

Any potting soil will do.

Gather the baskets.  While you're at it, pick a container to use for a table centerpiece.

Line each basket with plastic.  We use grocery sacks.  The plastic should come up the sides a few inches.

Put a few inches of potting soil in the basket.

Sprinkle with wheat.

Mist with water, give it a good soak.

Cover with plastic wrap.

Place somewhere warm and sunny.

Keep it moist.

The wheat will start to sprout and within a few days look like this:

Take off the plastic and continue to water each day.

By Easter, you should have lush green grass!

You can embellish the baskets with ribbon, and spring decor.  Fresh flowers cut to a short stem can be poked into the soil.  The wheat roots really hold the soil so don't picture potting soil being flung everywhere on Easter Sunday.
